IBM Sterling File Gateway Engineer – Job Description
We are hiring an experienced IBM Sterling File Gateway Engineer for a 12-month hybrid contract with possible extension. The role is based in either McLean, VA or Plano, TX, and requires onsite presence 2–3 days per week.
This opportunity is ideal for a senior-level engineer with 13+ years of experience and deep expertise in IBM Sterling File Gateway (SFG). You will be responsible for managing, supporting, and optimizing SFG environments and integrating them with cloud-based infrastructure, especially AWS.
The ideal candidate is technically strong, self-motivated, and able to work cross-functionally with network, cloud, and infrastructure teams to ensure seamless data exchange across enterprise environments.
IBM Sterling File Gateway Engineer – Key Responsibilities

Provide production support for existing SFG infrastructure

Develop, configure, and troubleshoot IBM Sterling File Gateway (SFG) implementations

Design and manage file transfer workflows, security rules, and routing channels

Ensure stability, availability, and performance of file transfer systems across enterprise endpoints

Collaborate with network and cloud teams to enable secure AWS connectivity and endpoint mapping

Analyze and resolve issues related to SFG configuration, communication protocols, and certificates

Monitor system logs, alerts, and dashboards to proactively identify performance or connectivity issues

Work closely with application teams to onboard new partners and configure communication protocols

Maintain clear documentation of file routes, system dependencies, and cloud integrations

Participate in release planning, testing, and upgrades for the SFG platform
IBM Sterling File Gateway Engineer – Required Skills and Experience

13+ years of total IT experience, with at least 5+ years of hands-on experience in IBM Sterling File Gateway

Strong understanding of managed file transfer protocols, including SFTP, FTPS, HTTPS, and AS2

Experience supporting production-level SFG systems and high-volume file exchanges

Familiarity with partner onboarding, BPML scripting, and dynamic routing channel configuration

Hands-on knowledge of networking concepts, including DNS, firewalls, load balancers, and proxies

Experience with cloud integrations, preferably with Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Comfort with certificate management, encryption standards, and secure transmission

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, especially with transfer failures and retries

Solid communication skills for cross-team collaboration and issue resolution

Willingness and ability to work onsite in McLean, VA or Plano, TX 2–3 times a week
IBM Sterling File Gateway Engineer – Preferred Qualifications

Experience integrating SFG with AWS S3, EC2, IAM, or Transit Gateway

Familiarity with Linux shell scripting and log analysis

Experience with IBM Sterling B2B Integrator in addition to File Gateway

Working knowledge of ITIL practices and enterprise-level support models

Previous experience in the banking, insurance, or financial services sector
